"Patty Griffin amazes me
both as a songwriter and performer. She exemplifies the type of
songwriting where someone can create a character and put that
character on as if they shared the same skin. In "Long Ride Home,"
it is obvious it is not Patty herself - as the song is written from
a man's perspective about a wife of forty years he has just buried
and his lonely limousine ride from the funeral back to a deserted
house - and yet she puts it forth as though she lived the experience
that very day. I am not sure I do justice to it, but my desire to
record it and include it on this record was motivated purely by a
love for this song, and some of the most brilliantly heart-wrenching
lyrics I've ever heard in my life." Long Ride Home
